How to make an FOI request

The Service will provide reasonable advice and assistance to anyone making a request for information. Where information is requested which is not included on our Publication scheme then a written request by e-mail, post or our online form can be submitted. The Service will confirm in writing if the information requested is held by the Authority.

Your completed request will be acknowledged and processed within 20 working days and the information will be sent to you in the format and method in which you request it: subject to any exemptions or fee that may apply. Sometimes a request may require more than 20 working days, either for clarification, research, or some other delay, however, we will keep you updated and look to expedite any delays.

Alternatively you call into the Headquarters at Pirehill, Stone, ST15 0BS or call into your nearest fire station.

Exemptions

There are certain exemptions that may apply under the Freedom of Information Act, these may include:

  • Information that contains personal data  – this is covered under the Data Protection Act 2018 and the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR).
  • Information which is intended for future publication.
  • Information that is held in court records.
  • Information pertaining to criminal investigation or proceedings.
  • Information that would prejudice commercial interests of a person or public authority.

This list is not exhaustive. The Service will confirm in writing whether the information is held and if an exemption applies, and the reasons as to why the information request is refused.

Fees

In most cases the information will be provided free of charge, however the Service reserves the right to charge for administering information requests that are not contained within the publication scheme, subject to the limits set by Government.
