New recruits set for intensive training programme
They are the foundation of our future as once they’re through this process these individuals will be the guardians of our organisation through the next 30-40 years.
20 individuals will be joining the service from today (Friday 15 January) and will take part in the National Firefighter Apprenticeship Programme.
18 of these new recruits will partake in the 13 week basic training course with the remaining two completing the first week of corporate induction before starting work on Blue Watch at Leek Fire Station. These individuals have already completed the necessary training.
Those taking part will be split into two groups for the duration of the course and – under strict Coronavirus protocols – will carry out a series of tasks aimed at giving them the necessary skills in:
• Hose running
• Ladders
• Pumping
• Breathing Apparatus (including real fire training)
• Ropes
• Water training
• Road Traffic Collision training
• First Response Emergency Care 3 training
• HAZ MAT training
• Incident Command training
• Prevent & Protect
• Multiple assessment sessions
• Corporate Induction
Once completed, a small presentation ceremony will be held.
Station Manager Lee Chevin from the service’s Learning and Development team said: “Despite the current lockdown we wanted to ensure these courses went ahead as they are a real priority for us.
“We’re ensuring that Coronavirus protocols are followed as it is imperative that we keep bringing new recruits through.
“They are the foundation of our future as once they’re through this process these individuals will be the guardians of our organisation through the next 30-40 years.”
