Combine harvester on fire

Firefighters are currently tackling a combine baler fire which has spread to a large number of hay bales in the Newcastle-under-Lyme area.

Crews were called to a field off Maer Lane, Maer, just after 10.55am this morning (Friday 12 August).

Firefighters from Cheadle, Longton, Sandyford and Stone attended the scene.

Upon arrival, crews found a combine baler well-alight, with the fire having spread to 50 hay bales.

No one has been reported injured.

Crews are using six pumps and a water carrier to extinguish the fire.

The cause of the fire was deemed to be accidental.

Stuart Ruckledge, Station Manager at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Firefighters have worked extremely hard and efficiently, given the remote location and extreme conditions, and are working with the farmer to prevent the fire from escalating further."

Firefighters remain at the scene.
