Urge to drive safely this winter

Cars driving in winter weather

As snow continues to fall across Staffordshire, we are reminding drivers of some key tips on how to stay safe on the roads this winter.

Driving in extreme weather conditions can be very dangerous, but there are a few key things you can do to help protect yourself, other road users and pedestrians.

Head of Prevention, Protection and Partnerships, Ian Read, said: “We often see an increase in road traffic collisions during periods of snow and ice, so I would urge people to only travel if necessary when the conditions are really bad.

“If you must travel, please drive with care and keep well back from the vehicle in front, and avoid going through deep water.

“Drivers should always make sure their vehicle is road worthy prior to winter, by arranging a service and checking the tyre pressure and tread regularly.

“Snow and ice should be completely cleared from vehicles before you set off and always be prepared for the conditions to change over a relatively short distance.”
