Reminder to ‘look when you cook’ following house fire

Frying pan on fire

We are reminding people to always ‘look when you cook’ after burnt food caused a house fire in Stoke-on-Trent.

Crews were called at 10.45am on Thursday 5 March to a house off Weston Road, Meir, following reports of a fire.

One crew attended the scene and found a burnt kitchen unit. Nobody was reported injured.

The cause of the fire was deemed to be burnt food that was left unattended on the hob.

Watch Manager Tim Plant attended the scene. He said: “More than 50 per cent of the house fires that we attend are caused by cooking and distraction is the main cause of these fires.

“Take any pans off the heat if you have to leave the room and always double-check that the oven is turned off when you’ve finished cooking.”
