People reminded to take care when using chemicals following house fire

Residents are being reminded to always take care when using chemicals in the home following a house fire in Stoke-on-Trent.
We were called at 5.30pm yesterday (Wednesday 3 September) to a house off Birches Head Road, Birches Head, following reports of a fire.
One appliance attended the scene, but a small fire had already been extinguished prior to our arrival.
A teenage girl went to hospital with minor burns and smoke inhalation.
Watch Manager Tom Harrison who attended the scene, said: “The fire was caused by acetone being used as a nail varnish remover which had accidentally dripped into a lit candle.
“Acetone gives off an invisible vapour which can spread and reach an ignition source so should never be used near an open flame.”
