People reminded to dispose of batteries safely following fire

We are reminding people to always dispose of batteries appropriately following a bin lorry fire in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

We were called to Knutton Lane at 11.30am on Wednesday (18 June) following reports of smoke coming from a bin lorry.

Two appliances attended the scene and extinguished a small fire inside the waste area of the lorry.

The fire was later deemed to have been caused accidentally, by a battery which had been put with general household waste.

We are reminding people to always separate batteries from other waste and dispose of them via one of the many battery recycling schemes in operation across Staffordshire.
