Crews tackle grass fire in sweltering heat

Three firefighters

Firefighters have been tackling a grass fire in Burton-on-Trent this afternoon (Monday 18 July).

Crews were called shortly after 11am to a rural property on Fauld Lane after a number of hay bales had caught fire inside of an open field.

Two crews from Burton and a single crew from Uttoxeter attended the scene.

Land owners used machinery to remove the remaining hay bales while firefighters continue to work to extinguish the blaze using two hose reel jets.

No one has been reported injured.

The fire is currently under control and an investigation into the cause of the fire will begin once it is fully extinguished.

Watch Manager Ian Pullen, who attended the fire, said: “Heavily-kitted crews have worked tremendously hard to stop the spread of this fire.

“These sweltering conditions pose significant fire safety risks, especially as grasslands and open fields are now dry and susceptible to spreading, if they come into contact with flames.

“If not for the rapid response from our firefighters and the helpful assistance from the landowners, this fire could have rapidly escalated beyond control.”
