Crews attend large waste fire

We're reminding people of the dangers of burning waste after responding to a recent incident in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Crews were called at 11.30pm on Saturday (1 November) to Waybutt Lane, Betley, following reports of flames coming from the area.

Four crews attended the scene and found a large waste fire.

After speaking with the Environment Agency, the fire was monitored as a controlled burn.

Watch Manager Dale Glover attended the scene. He said: “When crews arrived, we discovered a large fire of burning waste.

“We spoke with those at the scene around fire safety, including how burning waste can often get out of control.

"We'd like to remind everyone that the safest way to dispose of waste is to take it to a nearby tip. Burning waste at home can easily spread to fences, shrubbery and nearby homes, as well as the risk of releasing potentially hazardous chemicals into the air."
