Burning rubbish warning after shop ventilated

We are warning people against burning rubbish after a business in Stoke-on-Trent had to be ventilated due to smoke.

Crews were called at 5.20pm on Monday (10 February) to Walley Street, Burslem, following reports of smoke coming from a building.

Three appliances attended the scene and found that plastic and wood was being burnt nearby, causing a lot of smoke which had filled a nearby shop.

Crew Manager Chris Goodall attended the scene. He said: “Crews ventilated the shop, which thankfully was empty at the time, so nobody was injured.

“I would remind people that whilst it is not illegal to burn waste, fire can easily get out of control and spread to fences, hedges and even houses.

“To be safe, always take rubbish to the tip rather than burning it yourself.”
