Recruitment process
The firefighter recruitment process outlines the various stages of an application. A list of frequently asked questions are listed below that prospective candidates may find useful as well as video demonstrations of the job-related tests.
Here are the key dates for our next firefighter intake:
- Applications open: 28 September
- Applications close: 11 October
- Online test: 12 to 25 October
- Fitness test: 2 to 6 November
- Job related tests: 9 to 20 November
- Interviews: 3 November to 18 December
- Medical: 25 January to 12 February 2027
- Start and end date for the course: 25 March to 16 July 2027
Stage 1
Applications process
To assess whether you are likely to be suitable and eligible to progress. This includes questions in relation to equality and diversity.
Stage 2
Online tests
If successful at Stage 1, you will be sent online assessments by email for completion. These measure your suitability for the role based on personality characteristics and aptitude as well as assess your problem-solving ability.
Stage 3
Fitness assessment
Applicants must successfully pass a bleep test.
Stage 4
Job related tests
These are exercises designed to measure your practical and physical ability such as ladder climbs, casualty evacuations and equipment carrying. Videos on each of these tests can be viewed below.
Stage 5
Interview
This is the formal interview stage with our interview panel.
Stage 6
Pre employment checks
These consist of DBS checks, references and medical assessment.
References and checks
We require two references covering the last 3 years; one must be your current employer or education provider. One reference can be a character reference from someone who has known you for 3 years or more.
Your role will require a DBS Check and you will be expected to cooperate with the application process.
Job-related tests
As part of the recruitment process, there are a number of job-related tests that applicants are required to complete. Please see the videos below which provide a demonstration of the tasks required.
