Gas cylinder and aerosol safety

Compressed gas cylinders and aerosol canisters require proper storage, handling, and disposal. They can be dangerous if damaged, heated, or used incorrectly due to the pressurised gas, and sometimes flammable propellants, making them highly combustible. A heat source such as fire, sunlight, or even improper connections can cause them to rupture or explode, causing serious injury or damage.

How to stay safe with gas cylinders and aerosol canisters

  • Keep all aerosol cans completely out of direct sunlight and away from high temperatures in hot weather.
  • Never leave aerosols, perfumes, or similar pressurized products on windowsills or dashboards where sunlight and heat concentrate.
  • Store cans in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated location, away from direct sunlight, radiators, or open fires.
  • Never puncture or burn a can or cylinder, even when empty as they can still retain pressurized propellants. Disposing of them in bonfires or burning household waste is a major explosion hazard.
  • Handle with care in the car. Cars can heat up to extremely high temperatures very quickly. Do not leave aerosol cans (such as deodorants or dry shampoos) in a parked vehicle.
  • Never spray aerosols near a naked flame, hot surfaces (like hair straighteners), or while smoking.
