Water safety reminder ahead of hot weekend
With temperatures set to peak this Bank Holiday weekend we're reminding people to think twice before cooling off in open water.
Whilst the water might seem inviting, there are many hidden dangers such as strong currents and sharp objects.
Canals, rivers and lakes can also be much colder than you expect, particularly so early in the year, which can cause cramps and make it harder to swim.
Head of Prevent, Protect and Partnerships, Ian Read, said: “As the high temperatures co-incide with the Bank Holiday weekend and half term we are concerned that we may be called to water rescue incidents.
"It's particularly important for parents to discuss the dangers with their children, particularly teenagers, who may go out with their friends over the half term and not appreciate the risks and consequences of cooling off in open water.
"We'd encourage people to visit supervised pools or water play areas instead as they are much safer."
If you see someone or a pet in trouble in the water, do not try and rescue them yourself, call 999 immediately and where possible use the What3Words app to pinpoint your location.
If you get into difficulty in the water lie back with your arms and legs extended and float, avoid thrashing.
