Warning after crews called to bonfire

Bonfire

We are reminding people to avoid burning waste after crews were called to a bonfire in Leek.

We were called at 10pm yesterday (Wednesday 1 July) to a wooded area off Macclesfield Road in Rudyard following reports of a fire.

Two appliances attended the scene and found a bonfire had become out of control.

The fire was extinguished to stop it spreading to the surrounding area.

Watch Manager John Baines attended the scene. He said: “Burning waste yourself is dangerous because the fire can quickly become out of control, as we have seen in this incident.

“We recommend avoiding burning waste but if you do choose to have a bonfire, make sure to keep it away from vegetation and make sure the fire is attended at all times.”
