Teenager rescued from mud

We are urging people not to enter open water after a teenager got stuck in mud at Chasewater Country Park in Burntwood.

Crews were called to the scene at 4.15pm on Friday (21 August) following reports that a girl was stuck in knee-deep mud.

Multiple appliances attended the scene and assisted a girl to safety.

The girl was assessed by paramedics at the scene.

Group Manager Jordan Money attended the scene. He said: “Entering open water can put you in significant danger and I'm urging people to take the necessary measures to stay safe in Staffordshire.

“Thankfully, the girl rescued in this incident was not injured, but the risk that this type of activity poses to people is still very high.

“I would also urge parents to speak to their children about the dangers of entering open water, as shocking national statistics show that approximately 400 people die due to accidental drowning every year.”

If you see a person or a pet in trouble in the water:

• Do not enter the water yourself
• Raise the alarm or if you have a mobile phone call 999 and ask for the fire service. Try and give an exact location of where you are and look for signs or landmarks or use the What 3 Words app
• If there is a lifebuoy or throwline nearby throw it to them. If not throw anything to them that will float.
