Public urged to recycle responsibly

We are reminding people to recycle waste responsibly after we were called to a recycling centre in Cannock.

We were called at 10.15am today (Wednesday 21 October) to a recycling centre on Lichfield Road following reports of smoke coming from a skip.

Two appliances attended the scene and everyone had been evacuated before crews arrived.

Crews wore breathing apparatus and removed two drums from the skip which contained hazardous material.

The contents of the drums was identified as acid and crews used two hose reel jets to dilute it.

Station Manager Danielle Coleman attended the scene. She said: “Putting hazardous material into a skip is extremely dangerous and can easily start a fire.

“There is also the potential of harming the recycling centre workers and other members of the public if they were to handle the material incorrectly.

“I would urge people to think about what they are disposing of and do so responsibly.”
