Man given award after rescuing two from collision
A man who helped to rescue two people from a car following a collision in east Staffordshire has been given a special award.
On 12 July this year, 18-year-old Lucas Smith and his dad, Watch Manager Gareth Smith, came across a collision on Wellington Road, Burton-upon-Trent.
The collision involved multiple casualties, including two people trapped within a car which had overturned on its side.
Lucas recognised the danger to those involved and acted without hesitation to provide vital assistance before emergency services arrived.
Despite having no previous emergency service experience, Lucas displayed remarkable bravery, composure and compassion in highly challenging circumstances. Working alongside his father, he helped remove two trapped casualties from the overturned vehicle and assisted in moving them to safety. When one casualty was found to be unresponsive and suffering from a compromised airway, Lucas remained calm and continued to support efforts to provide essential care until ambulance crews arrived.
The award was presented to Lucas at a special ceremony at Burton Community Fire Station last night (Wednesday 7 October).
Chief Fire Officer, Glynn Luznyj, presented the award. He said: “Lucas demonstrated maturity, courage and an unwavering determination to help others at a time of significant risk and uncertainty.
“His actions contributed to the safety and welfare of those involved and helped improve their chances of survival and recovery.
“Lucas's selfless actions on that day exemplified the very best of public service. Through his courage, initiative and dedication to helping others, he made a potentially life-saving difference and is a credit to himself, his family and his community.”
