Firefighters to take part in 9/11 memorial event

A team of our firefighters are getting ready to take part in a memorial event which will mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11 this year.

A total of 343 firefighters, the same number of firefighters who lost their lives on 11 September 2001, including 10 from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, will travel to Atlanta, USA, for the event.

They will climb 110 floors, the height of the World Trade Centre, to honour those who lost their lives.

To prepare for the event, one of our firefighters who is taking part, Bob Mortimer, will be taking on a memorial stair climb in Southampton on Saturday 11 July.

He will join colleagues from emergency services across the country in climbing 110 floors inside St Mary’s Stadium.

Bob, who is based at Cannock Community Fire Station, said: “It is an honour to take part in the 9/11 memorial event this year to mark the 25th anniversary.

“343 firefighters gave their lives that day and it will be a privilege to complete the climb alongside international colleagues.

“The Southampton challenge in July is a family event and I will be raising money for various charities including The Blue Light Card Foundation and The Fire Fighters Charity.”
