Crews tackle large crop fire

Firefighter putting out grass fire

Firefighters have extinguished a large crop fire in a field near to the A5 in Staffordshire.

We were called at 3.10pm on Wednesday (8 July) to a farm off Watling Street in Stretton following reports of a fire.

Five appliances attended the scene and found a fire measuring approximately 200 metres by 200 metres.

The fire, which involved a large amount of crops and hedgerow, was extinguished using hose reel jets and beaters.

Thankfully, nobody was reported injured.

Station Manager Liam Hickey attended the scene. He said: “This fire was deemed to have caused accidentally.

“Due to the continued warm weather, the ground is much drier meaning that fires spread much more quickly.

“I would urge everyone to take extra care in the countryside this summer and help us limit the number of fires in the open area we are called to.”
