Crews currently in attendance at large recycling centre fire

Residents are being asked to close their windows and doors as we tackle a large fire in Cannock.

At 1.54pm today (25 May), passing fire crews spotted smoke at a recycling centre in the Leacroft Lane area.

A total of six crews are currently at the scene; two from Cannock, one from Rugeley, one from Stafford and one from Penkridge.

The fire involves approximately 100 tonnes of domestic and commercial waste which is well-alight.

Crews are using two main jets, two breathing apparatus and two hydro-shields to tackle the fire and we are accessing water from a nearby canal.

Firefighters are also using plant machinery to smother the fire along with onsite water bags.

Staff at the site have been advised to wear protective masks while crews work to dispel smoke in the area.

The Environment Agency and local authority have been alerted to the fire.
