Firefighters were called to a residential address near Birches Head Road, Stoke-on-Trent, at 12.15am on Sunday (3 April), following reports of smoke.

Crews from Sandyford, Hanley and Newcastle attended the scene alongside officers from Staffordshire Police.

Entry was forced into the property after smoke was observed emitting from the roof.

Four breathing apparatus and a jet were used to dampen down a room on the inside – leading to the discovery of a cannabis cultivation.

At 2.35am, a thermal scan was conducted to ensure the property was safe.

No-one was injured.

The cause was deemed accidental and police are currently investigating.

Crews departed the scene a short time later.
