Boy given award following Penkridge house fire

A boy has received a special commendation from our Chief Fire Officer after he stayed calm and communicated clearly during a fire inside his home.

On 1 September this year, ten-year-old Harrison Spruce discovered that a tumble dryer had caused a fire inside his home in Penkridge.

Harrison quickly alerted his mum, who evacuated the home with his brothers and sisters.

He then called 999 and despite the stressful circumstances, provided our fire control operators with clear, calm and accurate information including his full address, details of the fire and confirmation that he and his family had evacuated the home.

Chief Fire Officer, Glynn Luznyj, presented Harrison with his commendation in a special ceremony at Cannock Community Fire Station on Monday (28 September).

He said: “Harrison’s quick thinking, maturity and effective communication provided crews with a clear understanding of the incident before their arrival and contributed significantly to the safe outcome of the event.

“His action demonstrated exceptional courage, responsibility and awareness, serving as an excellent example to others.”
