20-acre crop fire deemed accidental

A large field fire in Enville which affected roughly 20 acres of land has been deemed accidental following an investigation.

We were called to the area, off Morfe Lane, shortly after 6.20pm on Friday (31 July) following a report of a large standing crop fire which was also affecting a tractor.

A number of appliances were sent to the scene. Firefighters used hose reel jets to contain the fire and stop it from spreading further.

It was extinguished shortly after 7.10pm and was later deemed accidental following an inspection.

Watch Manager Justin Cooley, who attended the incident, said: “The demand across Staffordshire during the dry weather has been significant, which is why we’re urging people to take all of the possible steps to avoid accidental fires from taking place.

“Please make sure that cigarettes are fully stubbed out and disposed of properly, waste is not left on the floor and barbeques are not used in green spaces.

“Failing to do any of these things drastically increases the chances of large-scale fires taking place in your community.

“By working together to take all of the necessary steps, we can help to limit the chances of accidents happening and help keep our communities and environment safe from the risks of fire.”
