Safety Stars

Could you be our next safety star?

Have you got a group/class with the talent to convince someone to change their mind? Can they come up with inventive ways to get messages across on camera?

If so, and you work with young people between the ages of 5 and 11, we need your help! We’re launching a Safety Star film challenge to encourage people living on their own to think about their fire safety to reduce accidents in the home.

Working as part of a group, we’re looking for young people to create a short video (less than 2 minutes) to persuade someone aged 45+ living on their own to do one, some, or all of the following to keep themselves safe:

  • Install a smoke alarm and check it bleeps every week (you can even use our lonely smoke alarm story to encourage people to test their alarm!)
  • Look when you cook – always keep an eye on your cooking to avoid accidental fires
  • Make sure your escape routes out of the house are kept clear
  • Never tackle a fire, get out stay out, call 999

There are two age categories in the competition, and we will pick a winning video from each:

  • 5 to 7 year olds
  • 8 to 11 year olds

To support your work on this topic, we’ve produced a short story and worksheet about a lonely smoke alarm, which are suitable for Key Stage 1. Handy for story time, or even as basis for your film, you’ll find the resources below - we hope they inspire your class!

We’re looking for inventive videos, so remember to be creative and showcase your powers of persuasion. Consider song, poetry, dance or anything exciting to get your message across on camera. You can work on your project as a school class, or as a part of a voluntary group such as Beavers or Brownies.

We know you’re wondering what the prize is! The winning film from each age category will be broadcast on an episode of the virtual Safe+Sound education programme, so your video will be viewed by hundreds of schools across Staffordshire.

Not only that, the two winning groups will also receive a visit to a fire station so you can find out what we do to keep people in Staffordshire safe.

If you think your group has what it takes to be Safety Stars, please send us a link for your video (please use WeTransfer to generate a link and email this link to us), along with your names and age category, to campaigns.engagement@staffordshire.police.uk by the closing date of Friday 27th May 2022. If you would like to send your video by WhatsApp please email us to request the contact number.

Please note, if you’re filming a group, please ensure you obtain permission from each child’s parent/guardian for them to feature in the film. Footage you submit to us for this competition may appear on the Safe+Sound broadcast, social media channels or our website, so please make sure identities are protected appropriately.

We will reveal the two winning videos during the virtual Safe+Sound episode in June 2022. To see the full terms and conditions for this competition please click here.

Good luck!
