Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service are now promoting OFQUAL accredited Fire Safety courses which offer lifelong qualification (subject to CPD).

Level 1 Fire Safety Awareness: Half day course

This course replaces the role of the Fire Warden/Marshal

You will, no doubt, be well aware of the potentially devastating effects of fires in the workplace in terms of lives lost, injuries, damage to property and the environment, and to the business continuity. You may also be aware that it is believed that most fires are preventable.

The importance of fire safety in the workplace is underpinned by health and safety legislation that places a duty on employers to establish policies and procedures and ensure their employees receive appropriate training.

This course is designed for all employees as an introduction to fire awareness and is an excellent ingredient in the induction programme of new employees. It deals with how fires can occur and what to do in the event of a fire. The qualification also provides a foundation for those employees who want to develop their basic fire safety awareness in order to assist their employer by undertaking more specific fire safety roles in the workplace to manage fire risk (e.g. as fire wardens/marshals/stewards etc).

Successful candidates will be awarded a national level 1 qualification.

Syllabus

A range of subjects are covered including:

  • The common causes of fire
  • The behaviour of fire
  • Legislation (brief)
  • Responsibilities
  • Fire prevention
  • What to do if a fire breaks out
  • The Selection and Practical use fire extinguishers (Practical session outside)
  • Emergency evacuation procedures

Numbers

A maximum of 16 students are allowed and must be a minimum of 14-years-old and a certificate can be offered to all, subject to assessment.

A student cannot assume a responsibility in the workplace until they reach the age of 16, and then it is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that the student is suitable for that role

Time

9am - 2pm (4 ½ hours + ½ hour practical session outside)

Cost per person at Local Community Fire Station £75 per person (see attached for Dates and Venue). Cost In-house Up to 6 candidates total £295, each additional candidate Add £35 up to maximum of 16.

Level 2 Fire Safety: 1-day course

The importance of fire safety in the workplace is underpinned by health and safety legislation that places a duty on employers to establish policies and procedures and ensure their employees receive appropriate training.

This Fire Safety Training Course is designed for employees who want to develop their basic fire safety awareness in order to assist their employer by undertaking more specific fire safety roles in the workplace to manage and have a better understanding of fire risk management and assessments. Successful candidates will be awarded a national level 2 qualifications.

FAA Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work

Where a workplace first aid risk assessment identifies a need for an Emergency First Aider in the Workplace, this one-day qualification meets the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982.

You will gain the knowledge and practical competence required to deal with a range of workplace first aid situations.

The qualification consists of one mandatory unit which you must successfully complete to achieve the qualification.

All learners will have the skills and knowledge to provide the organisation with Emergency First Aider’s that can provide treatment to their casualties in a prompt, safe and effective manner.

Syllabus

  1. Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider
    • Identify the role and responsibilities of a first aider
    • Identify how to minimise the risk of infection to self and others
    • Identify the need for consent to provide first aid
  2. Be able to assess an incident
    • Conduct a scene survey
    • Conduct a primary survey of a casualty
    • Summon appropriate assistance when necessary
  3. Be able to provide first aid to an unresponsive casualty
    • Identify when to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
    • Demonstrate CPR using a manikin
    • Justify when to place a casualty into the recovery position
    • Demonstrate how to place a casualty into the recovery position
    • Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty who is experiencing a seizure
  4. Know how to use Automated External Defibrillator (AED) (Training AED Used)
    • CPR must include ‘correct placement of AED pads’
    • Follow AED instructions
  5. Be able to provide first aid to a casualty who is choking
    • Identify when choking is:
      • Mild
      • Severe
    • Demonstrate how to administer first aid to a casualty who is choking
  6. Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with external bleeding
    • Identify the severity of external bleeding
    • Demonstrate how to control external bleeding
  7. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty who is in shock
    • Recognise a casualty who is suffering from shock
    • Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock
  8. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with minor injuries
    • Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty with:
      • small cuts
      • grazes
      • bruises
      • small splinters
    • Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty with minor burns and scalds

Certification

Assessment is ongoing by the instructor, and a three year qualification will be issued to those who satisfy the criteria. In addition, the HSE strongly recommend that all students undergo an annual refresher programme of three hours.

Numbers - Maximum per course 12 people

The qualification is available to learners aged 14 or over but a learner is unable to act as an Emergency First Aider in the workplace until they reach the age of 16.

Due to the practical nature of the first aid assessment there are physical demands and you must be able to demonstrate your skills as in a real-life situation. An example of this would be to demonstrate CPR on a manikin at floor level.
