Fire Control give life saving advice during blaze

February 20 2018

Fire Control gave a resident life saving advice during a flat fire in Stafford which saw her trapped in her home.

This was a significant electrical fire which left the resident with no way to escape the property. Although we always advise residents to Get Out, Stay Out this wasn’t possible in this case and she was advised to do exactly the right thing in this situation. If you can not evacuate the building, move away from the fire to a safer location and shut doors where possible to reduce fire and smoke spread

Crews from Penkridge, Stafford and Cannock were called to Sidney Avenue at 5.52pm on Tuesday February 13 after the occupier, a woman in her 30s, heard the smoke alarms sounding and discovered a fire in her hallway.

The resident was trapped in the first floor flat and was unable to leave the flat due to the location of the fire. The Fire Control Operator Nikki Smith advised the woman to move to a safe location in the flat and to stay there with the door shut while firefighters made their way to her.

The crews used a ladder to access the window of the room where the woman was safely breathing clean air and advised her to stay where she was whilst other firefighters extinguished the fire.

Station Manager Gary Fox said: “This was a significant electrical fire which left the resident with no way to escape the property. Although we always advise residents to Get Out, Stay Out this wasn’t possible in this case and she was advised to do exactly the right thing in this situation. If you can not evacuate the building, move away from the fire to a safer location and shut doors where possible to reduce fire and smoke spread.

“When the crews reached the window they could see the woman was able to breathe clean safe air and it was safer for her to stay and wait for the other firefighters to extinguish the blaze than to try and get her out of the building via a ladder.

“The occupier did suffer some mild smoke inhalation but if wasn’t for the fire survival guidance given by the Fire Control Operator there could have been a far more tragic outcome to this fire.”
