Electrical safety warning following house fire

October 2 2018

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is reminding residents not to overload plug sockets after a fire in Tamworth.

This incident is a stark reminder not to overload your plug sockets and to follow our general electrical safety advice; which you can find our website. We always recommend you use the long extension leads with individual switches for each socket and not to use the block plug sets. We also advise you turn off you extension plugs at night, when they are not in use or when you leave the house.

Station Manager Rob Horton

The Service was called to Buckingham Road at 5.06pm on October 1 to a fire on the first floor of a detached property. Crews from Lichfield and Tamworth attended and two fire firefighters wore breathing apparatus while using a hose reel jet to put out the blaze.

The occupiers, two adults, were able to leave their home with their two dogs after hearing the smoke alarms sounding.

A fire investigation found the incident was caused by an overloaded plug socket in the rear bedroom of the property.

Station Manager Rob Horton said: “Fortunately no one was injured during this incident which could easily have been the case as there is serious smoke damage to all of the upstairs rooms. Thankfully the residents had working smoke alarms which alerted them to the fire early on so they were able to leave the property straight away and were safe before we arrived.

“Unfortunately the pair will not able to return to their home for some time due to the level of damage but they are being supported by the Red Cross during this difficult time.”
