Blow torch causes accidental fire in Tunstall

A fire investigation has concluded that a blaze at an opticians in Tunstall was caused accidentally by a blow torch being used for maintenance work.

Thankfully, no was injured and our Business Support Team are on hand to help assist the opticians going forward.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to Nuvision opticians on High Street yesterday (Wednesday) to reports of a fire at around 2.20pm. Crews from Hanley, Longton, Sandyford and Newcastle attended the scene alongside colleagues from West Midlands Ambulance Service and Staffordshire Police.

Six firefighters wore breathing apparatus and used three hose reel jets to tackle the flames which were extinguished just before 6pm. 

The fire started in a neighbouring business’ roof before spreading to the opticians and causing significant damage.

Station Manager Ed Case said: “We found that the fire was caused accidentally due to maintenance work.

“The blaze was brought under control and the efforts of the firefighters meant that the fire was contained and prevented it from spreading to any other businesses.

“Thankfully, no was injured and our Business Support Team are on hand to help assist the opticians going forward.”
