Fire Safety Volunteer

Role: Fire Safety Volunteer
Location: Service Delivery Group
Responsible to: Protection Managers (Day to day support provided by Volunteer Coordinator)
Hours: A minimum commitment of 8 hours per month is required


The role of the Fire Safety Volunteer is to assist the business support and service delivery protection teams with their work to make businesses safer whilst also assisting in firefighter safety and the wider economic wellbeing of Staffordshire.


  • To attend business and community events to distribute information and promotional material as requested in order to raise fire safety awareness.
  • Supporting post business fire activity by visiting neighbouring premises and assisting with conducting customer feedback surveys following Incidents or interventions with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.
  • Gathering information from local businesses to support protection and Response teams. Volunteers can visit and list new businesses, identify potential risks/hazards (e.g. chemical use) and ensure that details are handed to the most relevant employee of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue service.
  • Leaflet drops to identified risk premises such as above take-away dwellings. This will assist in raising fire safety awareness of premises which may be not have been visited by protection or response teams.
  • Support the UWFS policy

Volunteers should note that at no time are they required to give out verbal technical advice, but would in these circumstances be able to direct the business to the right department or employee of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Skills and experience required

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Clear written and verbal skills
  • Health and Safety Awareness
  • Ability to achieve deadlines, work on own initiative and be self-motivated
  • Ability to work as a team member or individual
  • Coordination and administration skills, with a keen attention to detail
  • Driving license is preferable but not essential
