Grass fire prevention

Every year fire is responsible for the destruction of thousands of acres of countryside, open space and wildlife habitats with some fires lasting for several days. Please take care when in the countryside and follow these safety tips to help prevent grass fires:

  • Never throw cigarette ends out of car windows
  • Make sure cigarettes are put out properly
  • Take your rubbish home or put in a nearby bin
  • Don’t leave glass bottles lying on the ground. Sunlight shining through glass can start a fire
  • Avoid using open fires in the countryside
  • If you enjoying the outdoors, don’t use a disposable barbecue – if left smouldering it can easily set fire to the ground and spread
  • Keep matches and lighters out of childrens' reach and talk to them about the dangers of starting fires outside. Our Flames Aren’t Games has more information on this which can be found here
  • Don’t attempt to tackle fires. Leave the area as soon as possible and call 999.
