My work experience week at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Monday:

Monday 6th February- I arrived at the headquarters feeling pretty nervous, just before 9 and reported to Reception where I received my timetable for the week. On Monday morning I was based in Reception (Registry) with Jo where I learnt how to fax and bind booklets. She also gave me paper to staple, envelope and stamp using different equipment which I could actually do!I finished for lunch at 1.
From 2 until 5 that afternoon I was in Document Production where the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue website is designed and made. I was given different exercises to learn how to change images. I learnt how to blend images and change the contast and hue/saturation on them. I coloured in sunflowers blue and green which Pat found strange.

Tuesday:

Tuesday 7th February- on Tuesday I was based in the Fire Safety Training all day with Dave and Lorraine. Firstly I completed some exercises on the computer about using computers correctly and fire safety with extuinguisers. I learnt about each of these and answered questions on them which were nice and easy! I was then set the task of filling out certificates for people who had completed courses such as a fire marshal course. I did this by using mail merge to add their name, course and date of completion of course onto each certificate which I had never done before.
Before lunch I had a look around the training tower with Dave where they set it alight, which looked pretty grim! I then took part in a course which taught people how to correctly use fire extuinguisers. After they left I had a go with extuinuisers using the water, CO2, foam and powder extuinguisers and seeing the different effect of each one, which was fun! After lunch with Ellie (the other girl on work experience) I carried on with the certificates. At about 4 I went over to Supplies where Ellie had been that day to watch her trying on a firefighters uniform!

Wednesday:

Wednesday 8th February - after reporting to Reception and signing in I went to Supplies, where I was based all day. In the morning Mark from Supplies set me the task of grouping and graphing values of different supplies which was ridiculously hard! Just before lunch my French Teacher, Mrs Clitheroe visited!! Me and Ellie showed her around, and she took a few photos.
After lunch I spent another hour in Supplies carrying on with my task and then went to the Control Room at 3 where me and Ellie had been booked into. This is where all of Staffordshire's 999 calls for fire and rescue are taken. I sat with Ian and was there for 2 hours. I heard two real 999 calls and a hoax call from a child. I learnt how the 999 calls are taken and what then happens.. The Control Room was probably my favorite part of the week because it was amazing what happened there - thank you Jo for getting us there!

Thursday:

Thursday 9th February - After reporting to Reception I went back to Supplies where I continued on my task. This is where I was based all of that day. After a while Ellie and Olie from Document Production came to take pictures for the website. I then continued finishing my task until lunch by completing the graphs on the data.
After lunch I arrived back to Supplies with Ellie. She measured me and firstly did it wrong by measuring my waist as 20inch!! I was then dressed in the boots, trousers, coat, balaclava and helmet of a firefighter's uniform which was pretty hot! I then had my picture taken and was made to do exercises which made sure that no flames would reach my skin. The uniform would protect me for 30 minutes covered in flame! After I changed back, me and Ellie helped John in Supplies by sorting orders. He then gave us both a firefighter's cap badge and sticker before we left!

Friday:

Friday 10th February - after reporting to Reception me and Ellie went to Audio Visual where we spoke to a woman who told us what they do. Audio Visual sort out the pictures and videos which the Fire Service use. We then both went around to all the previous departments we had been to with Gerald (janitor) to take photos for the website. We went back to Control and Supplies along with others to re-enact what we had previously been up to and took photos which was funny! Before lunch we then both helped in a charity car wash where the staff's cars were washed but we didn't stay long because it was too cold and we couldn't feel our toes! After lunch I wrote up my report for the website and then went home at 4!
I have had a really good week and thank you for having me!
