Electric Blanket Testing

|Start of content|
Each year Fire Brigades are called to some 1500 fires caused by electric blankets. More than 20 people are killed and 250 injured in these fires.

Using electric blankets safely:

Of the people killed injured in these fires, many are elderly.  Help your elderly relatives or neighbours by making sure they know how to use their electric blanket safely.

  • Make sure that the blanket is laid flat.
  • Folding or creasing can damage the wiring and cause overheating.
  • Make sure that both the lead and the switch/heat control hang freely and that the electric flex is not twisted, coiled, laid across the blanket or tucked under the mattress or covers.
  • Make sure under blankets are securely tied to the mattress if they have tie tapes.
  • Check that the head of the blanket is not placed at the foot of the bed.
  • Make sure the blanket is switched off and unplugged BEFORE getting into bed unless it is marked as suitable for all night use.
