The Staffordshire Arson Reduction Team is a partnership between the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and Staffordshire Police. The team consists of Risk Reduction Manager Simon Craythorn and Sgt Mick Butters

Reducing the number of deliberate fires will contribute to:

  • Making the communities of Staffordshire a safer and better place to live.
  • Reducing fire deaths, injuries and financial losses.
  • Sustaining the environment.
  • Reducing the demands on the police and fire service enabling the provision of more effective and efficient services.
  • Arson reduction projects throughout the country have proved to be very cost effective, figures from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister estimate that for every pound spent £16 is saved through reduced fires.

In order to tackle arson and its effects the Government have set ambitious targets for The Fire and Rescue Service to reduce the number of deliberate fires by 10% by 31st March 2010.

Best Value Performance Indicators BVPI 206 = number of deliberate fires/10,000 population will be used to evaluate the performance in reducing the number of deliberate fires.

Aims of the Arson Reduction Team:

  • To reduce the number of deliberate fires in Staffordshire.
  • To play an active role in the various partnerships aimed at reducing the levels of crime and in particular arson within Staffordshire.
  • To work closely with partners to investigate and identify patterns of arson seeking prosecutions where appropriate.
  • To identify arson ‘hot spots’ and implement appropriate arson reduction strategies.
  • To seek funding from Government and elsewhere to support arson reduction strategies.
  • To co-ordinate arson reduction strategies across the county and disseminate best practice.
  • To work as part of a regional arson reduction team sharing resources, best practice and implementing regional initiatives where appropriate .
