Now that the summer holidays are here Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is reminding campers on how they can stay safe
this summer.
Head of Risk Reduction, Ian Sloss, says: “Fires in tents spread very quickly and can destroy a tent in just 60 seconds, so
it’s really important to take fire safety seriously. Some of the main points to remember are to ensure you cook a safe distance
away from your tent and only use torches inside tents – never use candles.”
Campers are advised to follow these simple tips:
On arrival:
Ensure that tents are kept at least six metres apart.
Find out what the firefighting arrangements on the campsite are and where the nearest telephone is.
Have an escape plan and be prepared to cut your way out of the tent if there is a fire.
Make sure everyone knows how to put out a clothing fire – stop, drop and roll.
During your stay:
Flammable liquids and gas cylinders should be kept outside of the tent and away from children.
Do not cook near flammable materials or long grass.
Keep a torch handy for emergencies - never use candles in or around tents.
Don’t smoke inside tents.
Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children.
If there is a fire:
Fires in tents spread very quickly, get everyone out straight away.
Call the Fire and Rescue Service, giving the exact location.
Give a map reference if possible, otherwise a landmark such as a farm or pub.
