Retained firefighters are a crucial part of the Fire Service - they provide an efficient and effective emergency service to the community of Staffordshire.
What is a Retained Firefighter?
Retained firefighters provide emergency response cover from either their home or work base, which needs to be within five minutes of their local station. After their initial training course, retained firefighters attend weekly drill nights to ensure they maintain their skills, in addition to which there are many more opportunities for training throughout the year. As well as responding to emergencies, retained firefighters can also get involved in community fire safety initiatives in their local area, including home fire risk checks and school visits.
How Can I Become A Retained Firefighter?
In order to become a retained firefighter you must:
Many retained firefighters are in full time employment and have an agreement with their employer to leave work should they be alerted to attend an incident. Others provide cover during nights or weekends. Retained service also appeals to unemployed people.
As a retained firefighter you will play a full and valuable role in Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and you can expect the same respect from the community and have the same job satisfaction as full time firefighters.
If you do live or work within five minutes of a local station and are interested, or would just like to find out more, please visit or contact your local Area Command without obligation, on any of the Fire Station drill night evenings between the times shown.
