Three Staffordshire firefighters are set to compete in the most extreme endurance race in the World, the 100th Anniversary Race to the South Pole.

Newcastle Firefighter, Andy Topham, Cannock Firefighter Jason Humphreys and Tamworth Firefighter Brian Roy will be competing against other international teams in the challenge which starts on 2nd January 2012. The 2012 Amundsen Omega 3 South Pole Race will be the 100th anniversary of the historical Scott/Amundsen Race.

The team, named Fire and Ice GB, are already training hard, on a daily basis, for the challenge which will see them set off from the edge of the Antarctic continent to ski across the coldest, driest and windiest continent on earth, battling temperatures of – 51°C.

The team are hoping to raise £100,000 for the Fire Fighters Charity and SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association) Forces Help.
