Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Fire Control receive all emergency calls to the Service. 28 Control Staff work across four shifts and they handle in the region of 35,000 calls a year.
Fire control take all the relevant details from the caller and they then send the appropriate number of fire engines and officers to deal with the incident. When firefighters arrive at the incident they radio messages back to fire control to keep them updated about the incident, this may involve requesting additional resources.
Fire Control are responsible for ensuring that fire cover is maintained across Staffordshire, this involves moving resources to standby at different stations, if lots of appliances have been sent to a particular incident.
Fire Control are also responsible for requesting assistance from other agencies that may be required at an incident, such at the Police, Ambulance or the Environment Agency.
On occasions Fire Control Staff are required to give fire survival advice over the phone if a caller is unable to escape their home when it is on fire.
In May 2011 Staffordshire will move to a Regional Control Centre based in Wolverhampton.
