SESHAA - A brief history

• March 1995 – Volgograd, Russia.
Fact finding mission to look at the needs of the Volgograd Fire Service.

• February 1996 – Sarajevo, Bosnia.
‘Operation Phoenix’ transported £10,000 of medical aid and personnel.

• June 1996 – Sarajevo, Bosnia.
‘Operation Trinity’ transported £20,000 of medical equipment to a hospital and also retrieved medical equipment from a previous mission.

• June 1996 – March 1997 Sarajevo, Bosnia.
Project put into operation to supply fire fighting equipment to Sarajevo Fire Service.

• August 1997 – Librahzd, Albania.
Transportation of £20,000 of medical aid and equipment was originally planned for March 1997 but was delayed due to war.  The aid was stored by the Italian Fire Service in Bari and Southern Italy and then in August 1997 transported to Librahazd by SESHAA contacts via the UN in Rome.

• October 1997 – Gracanica, Bosnia.
Follow up mission to Librahzd was planned but abandoned due to war.  Mission was rescheduled and delivered full fire kit and an assessment was made as to their fire fighting capabilities.

• April 1999 – Gracanica and Sarajevo, Bosnia.
Return mission :-
(a) Delivered fully kitted fire appliance to and training of personnel for Gracanica.
(b) Clothes, toys and hygiene products delivered to an orphanage and a playground was built.
(c) Medical aid delivered to five refugee camps in the area.
(d) Clothes, toys and hygiene products delivered to five refugee camps and orphanage in Sarajevo.

• 1999 - ‘Operation Livingstone’. - Malawi, South East Africa.
An ongoing mission .  Phase 1 was the planning phase carried out throughout 1999.  The main objectives are to offer training, PPE, fire fighting equipment and support to the Fire Service.

• August 2000 – Phase 2 - Blantyre, Malawi.
Technical training began covering the basics and advice on fire safety in the home.  Practical training was also given due to the lack of previous training.  Advice was given on ongoing training needs and in the following year first aid training was given by the Malawi Red Cross.

• January 2001 – Phase 3 – Blantyre and Mzuzu, Malawi.
Members of the team travelled to Tanzania to assist in shipment of 3 fire appliances. 2 are now fully operational in Blantyre and 1 in Mzuzu.  In depth training culminating in passing out ceremony and star student award.

• January/February 2002 – Phase 4 - Malawi.
Training workshops conducted and 35 officers from various cities attended.  Skilled SESHAA members delivered training on Community Fire Safety, recruitment and logistics, FBU policies and emergency planning.

• August 2002 – Phase 5 – Malawi.
(a) Training in Breathing Apparatus, RTC extrication techniques, Trauma training and technical input for IFE students.
(b) Following negotiations with SESHAA, 2 brand new RTC vehicles and 1 aerial appliance were donated by the Korean Government hoping to open factories in Blantyre.
(c) Following a donation from the FBU we assisted in the delivery of food aid to the villages of the Plateau, nr Lake Malawi. 5 villages were given enough food and donations to last for 4 months.

• September 2005 - Sokolow Malapolski, Poland.
Phase 1 Planning visit to by SESHAA members following a request for assistance via the Metropolitan Police London.

 

“The relief of poverty and hardship and sickness of refugees and victims of oppression, violent conflict or natural disaster anywhere in the World, in particular by:  

1. The provision and transportation of humanitarian aid; and  

2. By establishing technical and professional aid, assistance and exchanges of resources and personnel to locations and organisations deemed to be in need of such support.”
