What to do in an emergency

What you can do to prepare

Preparing for emergencies

Under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004, Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service is a known as a ‘Category 1 responder’.  What does this mean?  In simple terms, our organisation has a legal duty to assess risk, work with other organisations to make plans for major incidents (such as floods), test and exercise these plans and communicate with the public.  We also have to have our own Business Continuity Plan to ensure that we continue our core business, even in times of significant disruption.

In Staffordshire, there are 22 Category 1 responders from the Emergency Services, Local Authorities, NHS and the Environment Agency.  These organisations all work together through a partnership called the Staffordshire Resilience Forum.  Supporting the partnership 24 hours a day is a specialist organisation called the Civil Contingencies Unit or CCU, which is based at Stafford Fire Station.  To find out more about the CCU, there is a 5-minute film about its work video on its website at Staffordshire Prepared.  You will also find a lot of other useful information on the website, including a profile of Staffordshire key risks on the Community Risk Register.

One of the duties under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004 is to communicate with the public before, during and after an incident.  Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service have put together these few pages of information to enable the communities of Staffordshire to be more prepared and resilience against any incidents which may occur.
