3/8/2017

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service has been tackling a large fire in Longport throughout the night and is expecting to be there for the rest of the day.

“We have made great progress with this incident and are currently scaling back firefighting operations but we do expect to be here for the next four hours.

Station Manager John Kitchener

The Service was called to a fire at reclamation/recycling site on Chemical Lane on Wednesday August 2 at 7.19pm.

The incident involved 150 tonnes of wooden railway sleepers covering a 30 by 30 metre area.

At the height of the incident five appliances were in attendance and have been using main jets throughout the night in order to control the blaze. The firefighters split into three sectors in order to contain the fire and stop it from spreading.

The incident is now being scaled down to two pumps from Hanley and Biddulph and ground monitor hoses are being used to extinguish the rest of the fire.

Station Manager John Kitchener said: “We have made great progress with this incident and are currently scaling back firefighting operations but we do expect to be here for the next four hours.

“We would really like to thank the owner of the site for their assistance and the Environment Agency who have given us incredible support when making tactical plans.

“We advise local residents to keep their windows and doors shut at this time.”
