Group Manager for the west of the county Dermot Hogan

The incident occurred on Six Ashes Road yesterday evening and the first crew arrived at the scene at 6.49pm.

A single storey garage which was attached to the property was well alight when firefighters attended.

Crews from Womborune, Kinver and Codsall were joined by appliances from the West Midlands to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters wore four breathing apparatus and used three hose reel jets when putting the blaze out.

Sadly, a man in his early seventies did not survive the incident.

Group Manager for the west of the county Dermot Hogan said: "This is a very tragic incident in which a man sadly lost his life. As a Service we would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of friends of the victim. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway today.

"We would strongly urge people never to try to tackle fires themselves. If you see a fire, leave the building immediately and call 999."

One crew from Cannock is still at the scene today.
