Domestic Sprinklers

Finding new ways to protect the home

Domestic sprinklers are the equivalent of having a Firefighter, ready and waiting, in every room of your home!

Here at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service we would like to see domestic sprinklers fitted as standard to all new homes built in the future. In the UK it is Wales that is leading the way in this field and they soon hope to be passing legislation that requires just that.

In Vancouver, Canada, a law was passed for all new homes to be fitted with domestic sprinklers as standard. The result has been a massive decrease in the number of serious fires in the home

To fit domestic sprinklers in a home that is already built, can be quite costly, however to fit them when a house is being built only costs around the equivalent of a good quality carpet. A small price to pay for the ultimate protection!

In certain circumstances it is necessary to fit sprinkler systems to a house already built, as is the case with Roger Stephens, who is featured in the above video. Roger suffers from Multiple Sclerosis and as a result he only has movement in his left arm, meaning he would be unable to escape should a fire occur. Now he has a sprinkler system fitted though he is safe in the knowledge that should a fire occur he is protected.
